Is Your Elderly Parent Depressed?

Elderly Care in Canton OH

Depression is a common mental health problem throughout the world today, and the elderly are certainly not immune to its effects. Whether the depression comes about because of physical health Elderly Care in Canton OHchallenges or appears on its own and leads to a decline in physical condition, it can be a very serious matter. Being all alone is one of the reasons elderly people can get depressed, but there are ways to reduce the risk to your senior parent, even if you can’t be there in person. Talking to them often and staying involved in their life can give them something to look forward to and help them feel better.

Another thing you can do in order to help your aging loved one is to hire an elderly care provider. This is valuable in two ways: they get the help they need around the house, and they also get companionship so they aren’t as lonely. That can make a big difference in how much they can do for themselves, and how much they want to do, and can help them live a healthier, happier, longer life. Being able to provide that for your parent through the hiring of a caregiver is a wonderful thing, and it can make you feel better about not living close by or being able to check on them all the time.

There are many services an elderly care provider can perform. Many caregivers help elderly people keep up with household tasks like cleaning, and they also focus on making sure they eat right and take their medications when they should and in the right dosage. Additionally, they can provide help with bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom, and can take them to doctors’ appointments, shopping, and to other places. Being able to have help with all of those things can really bring an elderly person around and help them feel more independent.

Having someone to talk to can get them thinking about fun things that they used to do and hobbies that they may still be able to enjoy. That may get them interested in doing more, both physically and mentally, which can improve their depression and their mental health in general. From that point, they may become more engaged in life again, and that can lead to more activity and improved quality of life.

Owner, Founder at Rather Be Home Senior Care
Deidre Scott is the founder of Rather Be Home and has always found her passion in the health and well-being of others. Shortly after receiving her bachelor's degree she worked for Bristol Myers-Squibb as a cardiovascular representative. Her specialties included blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol. She then worked 15 years with Procter & Gamble where she educated Veterinarians on how nutrition could help nutritionally manage various disease states such as kidney failure, colitis and diabetes in cats and dogs. During that time she pursued her education further and received her MBA.

She founded Rather Be Home in 2014 after seeing the tribulations her friends were having with their aging parents. Hard decisions need to be made and no one knows where to go for help. Having lived with her grandparents most of her childhood and helping her grandma care for her grandpa it just seemed natural to open a home care business. Deidre is also a certified instructor for CPR/First Aid & AED through the American Red Cross and a State Tested Nurse Aide registered through the Ohio Department of Health. Currently she is undergoing classes to become a Certified Senior Advisor. She sets rigorous standards for her company as well as the caregivers she employs.
