Why Does Arthritis Hurt so Much?

Elder Care in Massillon OH

The impact of arthritis can be devastating if steps are not taken to understand why it occurs in the first place. Elder Care in Massilon OHHowever, due to the fact that there are more than 100 different types of arthritis, it can be difficult to narrow down the specific facts regarding the origin of the pain.

According to the Arthritis Foundation, there are more than 50 million Americans currently suffering from the disorder. However, even with this many people suffering through pain each day, there are still quite a few misconceptions about the disease. For example, many people believe arthritis is simply minor pains associated with becoming older. The fact is that arthritis is not just found in elderly individuals, and two-thirds of the people who suffer from the disorder are under the age of 65.

What causes arthritis pain?

Essentially, arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. This inflammation causes swelling and redness in the joints, which damage the tissues that are responsible for cushioning the movements they make and resulting in pain.

Pain variation

No two people suffer from arthritis to the same degree or intensity of pain. Furthermore, the pain an individual experiences can be severe one day and mild the next. According to UW Medical, there are a number of factors that can cause arthritis pain to become worse, which include:

Social and emotional reasons

The fears people have regarding the pain can actually impact the amount of pain they experience. Factors such as their religious and cultural background, as well as the way that others around them react when in pain, can also impact their own reaction to arthritis pain.

Physical factors

The sensitivity level of a person’s nervous system can also determine how they react to pain on a chemical level. In most cases, a person will need to work with their doctor to develop a plan that will reduce the social and physical factors that may be making the arthritis pain worse.

It is important to understand that arthritis pain is common. In a recent Gallup Organization poll, nine out of ten Americans reported that they suffer from arthritis related pain at least once mostly and 15 percent of the individuals stated that the pain was severe. The good news is that pain associated with arthritis can be managed. There is no need for anyone to let arthritis pain decrease their quality of life.

In another study conducted by UW Medical, it was discovered that while pain can interfere with relationships at work, as well as daily life, there are very few people who actually talk about this issue with their doctor. The only way for the intensity of arthritis pain to be managed is to talk to your doctor or your aging parent’s doctor to understand why it is occurring and how to treat and reduce the pain.

Deidre Scott is the founder of Rather Be Home and has always found her passion in the health and well-being of others. Shortly after receiving her bachelor's degree she worked for Bristol Myers-Squibb as a cardiovascular representative. Her specialties included blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol. She then worked 15 years with Procter & Gamble where she educated Veterinarians on how nutrition could help nutritionally manage various disease states such as kidney failure, colitis and diabetes in cats and dogs. During that time she pursued her education further and received her MBA.

She founded Rather Be Home in 2014 after seeing the tribulations her friends were having with their aging parents. Hard decisions need to be made and no one knows where to go for help. Having lived with her grandparents most of her childhood and helping her grandma care for her grandpa it just seemed natural to open a home care business. Deidre is also a certified instructor for CPR/First Aid & AED through the American Red Cross and a State Tested Nurse Aide registered through the Ohio Department of Health. Currently she is undergoing classes to become a Certified Senior Advisor. She sets rigorous standards for her company as well as the caregivers she employs.
